Who are the Celts ? |
|
The term Celt comes from the Greek work Keltoi, which means “barbarian”. In the green and Roman worlds, any peoples who did not speak and/or write in either Greek or Latin were considered barbarians. Julius Caesar wrote of the Celtic culture, as did the Greek Hedatacus almost 500 years before. The Celts were anything but barbarian. They lived in well organized villages, farmed, and engaged in craft making. They were very artistic, and they’re culture can easily be indentified by the style of art incorporating swirling and overlapping lines. The Celts were also inventors, developing the shovel, pickaxe, scythe, chisel, hammer, file, handsaw, pincers, shears, and even door hinges for the homes they occupied. They were the first people in Europe to work with iron, make pottery on a wheel, and ride horses. Celtic warriors invented chain mail armor and shoes for their horses. Women acted as tribal chiefs and military leaders. They were permitted to own land in their own name, and could divorce of their own accord. Celtic tribes began migrating across central Europe, with settlements having been discovered around Lake Halstatt near present day Switzerland. There, they worked metals in bronze and mined salt. Archeologists have uncovered settlements and discovered that the Celts lived in houses made of native wood, not unlike the log houses the early pioneers built in North America. Oral tradition and archeological evidence holds that the tribes known as Celts originated in the area of Scythia around the Caucus Mountains and the lower Volga. They are believed to also have been known as the Sakka and the Iskuza. |
